Jewett Girl, d. 1873
Horrible Outrage
Detroit, 6. Peter Jewett, father of a little girl outraged by James Corrian in Muskegan, on Monday night, went to the jail today and asked permission to see the prisoner, which was granted. Jewett then stepped to the door of the cell where the villain was confined, took a pistol from his cap and shot Corrian in the head. Jewett was then taken before Joshua Hoyt and admitted to bail. The facts in the case are briefly, as follows: On Monday last Corrian enticed the little girl, only nine years old, into the woods, where he kept her all night foully outraging her person. Search was made for the child during the night by her alarmed parents, but in vain. About daylight the fiend let her go, and she came home, barely able to walk. Corrian was arrested on Tuesday morning and lodged in jail. The little girl died the following morning. The outrage created great excitement and indignation at Muskegan tonight. It is feared the excited crowd will force entrance to the jail tonight and finish Corrian, who is still living. The Governor ordered a company of militia from Grand Rapids to act in case of necessity.
